Named for its section of the Small Business Act, 8(a) is the deepest SBA program: nine years of eligibility for sole-source and set-aside awards, business counseling, and mentor-protégé matching, in exchange for owners documenting social and economic disadvantage and staying under net worth caps. The nine-year clock starts once, does not pause, and does not reset, so entering before you can use it burns years you cannot get back. It is heavier paperwork than the other certifications, and also the most valuable one for businesses that qualify and are ready.
